Anchor Text

The text that you click on to activate and follow a hyperlink to another web page or another web site.

Australian Web Industry Association

Formerly Port 80 Inc, the Australian Web Industry Association represents businesses, individuals and students involved in the web industry and aims to: further the advancement of the web industry within Australia; educate the general public about the role of professionals in the web industry; and foster greater ties with like-minded organisations.

 

Backlink

A link to your site from another website. A natural (unpaid) backlink is a good way to gain online authority.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs (or breadcrumb trail) is a navigation aid used in user interfaces to give users a way to keep track of their location within programs or documents.

Click-through Rate

The number of clicks on a link, as a percentage of the number of views of the link.

Content Management System

We build all of our websites on a content management system (CMS) platform allowing admin to edit, change and update content ad hoc without the need to consult your development team (although we are always here to help is need be!).

Cost per Click

The amount an advertiser pays an ad host (such as a site owner, search engine or ad network) each time a visitor clicks on the advertiser's link.

DMOZ

The DMOZ Open Directory Project (ODP) is the most comprehensive human edited directory of the Web, compiled by a vast global community of volunteer editors.

Domain Name

An important purpose of domain names is to provide easily recognisable and memorisable names to numerically addressed Internet resources.

JavaScript

A scripting language used to enable programmatic access to objects within both the client application and other applications.

Keywords

The words or phrases a person types into a search box. Also refers to the words or phrases a site owner wants to be found under in search engines.

Link Building

Is the practice of obtaining links from external websites to your own to improve both direct referrals (people clicking on the links) and search engine ranking.

Lorem Ipsum

Is dummy text used within design and printing to emphasise design rather than content. Generate Lorem Ipsum for yourself when creating your next design project!

Marketing

A social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others. Basically, everything involved with getting a product or service to a client.

Marketing Mix

The combination of marketing 'tactics' ie product, pricing, placement and promotion deployed to get a product or service to your end client.

Magento

Magento is the community, open-sourced CMS platform upon which we build complex web stores.

Meta tag

Special HTML tags containing instructions for spiders or a user's browser. Many tags are available, specifying everything from copyright information to page refresh dates. In search engine marketing and search engine optimization, the most widely used meta tags contain the description, keywords, redirection instructions and instructions for robots.

Open-source

An approach to the design, development, and distribution of software, offering practical accessibility to a software's source code. True open source products have no licensing or ongoing costs, and usually have a community of developers/users around the world.

Organic Search

Web page listings that appear in a search engine's results, based on the engine's own algorithm. As long as a listing has achieved its position naturally (not paid for), it is a "natural" or "organic" listing.

PHP

A widely used, general-purpose scripting language that was originally designed for web development, to produce dynamic web pages.

Ranking

Where a listing appears in search results, relative to the first listing. For example, in results delivering 10 listings per page, a listing that appears fifth on the third page is ranked 25th. Page ranking relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure and analysis of page content as an indicator of an individual page's value.

Relevancy

The extent to which the searchers who find your page(s) are interested in what you're marketing. As with all marketing, the better the targeting, the greater the probability of positive conversion.

Ruby on Rails

Ruby on Rails (often shortened to RoR) is an open-source web application framework for the Ruby programming language.

Search Engine

A site or software that enables users to search a database of web pages, documents and/or other information. Contextually defined, a search engine's primary function is to deliver relevant matches to human-entered search queries. 97% of all searches are conducted through Google, Yahoo! and Bing.

Search Engine Friendly

A web page designed and optimised for high search engine rankings. Such pages are rich in keywords and structured for ease of crawling.

Search Engine Marketing

Any marketing activity involving a search site, including advertising on search result pages, paying for placement and/or search engine optimisation.

Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is all about getting your website ranked as high as possible in organic (unpaid) search engine results. It involves planning and adjusting the content of a web page in order to improve its position in natural search results, including modifications to code and displayed content.

Their templates do not dictate HTML to us as the developer (meaning that we can create a site to suit exactly your needs) while providing an interface that is easy to use for our clients. As it is a community, open-sourced CMS there are no upfront or ongoing licensing costs and a global community of developers to provide ongoing support.

Site Map

A site map is a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organised in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site.

Submission

A request to be included in the database (index) of a search engine or directory. Submission does not guarantee inclusion, even if the submitter pays for consideration.

Tag Cloud

A tag cloud is a stylised way of visually representing occurrences of words used to described tags. The most popular topics are normally highlighted in a larger, bolder font (just like our header above!).

Traffic

The measurement of the amount of users that visit a website.

URL

A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a subset of the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that specifies where an identified resource is available and the mechanism for retrieving it.

Web Application

It is also a computer software application that is coded in a browser-supported language (such as HTML, JavaScript, Java, etc.) and reliant on a common web browser to render the application executable.

Web Hosting

A type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organisations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web.

Website Promotion

Website promotion is the continuing process to promote a website to bring more visitors to the website. Many techniques such as web content development, search engine optimisation (also known as SEO), and search engine submission, are used increase the traffic to a site.
